Sustainable Tourism Global Center and WTTC with Environmental Impact Research

Sustainable Tourism Global Center and WTTC with Environmental Impact Research - TRAVELINDEXRiyadh, Saudi Arabia, November 6, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / In a defining moment for the global Travel & Tourism sector, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the Sustainable Tourism Global Center (STGC) initiated by the Ministry of Tourism of Saudi Arabia today released the latest industry-shaping Environmental Impact Research data.

Last year, during the WTTC Global Summit in Riyadh, the two organizations launched the collaboration and unveiled the inaugural results including the sector’s accurate greenhouse gas emissions for the first time ever.

This represents the most comprehensive environmental data in Travel & Tourism’s history.

H.E. Ahmed Al Khateeb, Minister of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, said:

“We welcome this joint report initiated by the Ministry of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, and WTTC, as an invaluable resource for decision makers around the world. It provides vital insights and unique impactful environmental research into how Travel & Tourism has both an influence on climate change and how it is affected by it.

“Our research highlights the consistent decline of emissions intensity of Travel & Tourism over the last decade. Whilst the sector’s GDP growth averaged 4.3% annually, emissions only grew by 2.5% annually between 2010-2019 Still, the continued commitment to achieve net zero emissions for the Travel and Tourism sector has never been more important.

“We firmly believe Travel & Tourism is part of the solution and that is why Saudi Arabia has taken a leading role to accelerate and track this change to promote sustainability across the sector, protect nature and support communities.”

Today’s launch not only tells the sector’s direct impact, but also its supply chain impacts, both within national borders and those that are embedded in Travel & Tourism’s international supply chains.

The groundbreaking ER data covers 185 countries across all regions and will be updated each year with the latest figures.

Building upon WTTC’s world-renowned Economic Impact Research, this initiative introduces individualized factsheets for each country and major global regions, and a dedicated microsite allowing users to explore the data in detail.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO said: “Today marks a pivotal moment for the global Travel & Tourism sector. Through this data, we are highlighting the sector’s multi-dimensional impact — economically, environmentally, and societally.

“We’re talking about a vision that sees beyond tourism and leans into its sustainable future. With this data, we are not just reflecting on where we are now, but actively charting our course for a future where the sector progressively reduces its environmental footprint and boosts its social impact.”

H.E. Gloria Guevara, Chief Special Advisor of the Minister of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, said:

“There is no doubt that this joint report between the Saudi Ministry of Tourism’s STGC and WTTC is a major milestone for the global Travel & Tourism sector. We are proud that Saudi Arabia has stepped up to become part of the solution. The STGC will unite the sector to accelerate the transition to a net-zero world, while protecting nature and supporting communities. Our mission is to be the leading global center for sustainable Travel & Tourism, delivering impact driven research, stakeholder-centric services, and tangible end-to-end solutions.”

“As an industry, we are responsible for 8.1% of all carbon emissions globally, rising on average 2.5% a year between 2010 and 2019. However, global Travel & Tourism’s GDP grew at an average of 4.3% per year, indicating the link between our sector’s growth and its carbon footprint has been loosened.

“Now for the first time we have the data which enables us to properly quantify the sector’s global emissions and identify and track which measures will work so we can map our journey towards a net zero future.”

Arnold Donald Chairman of WTTC said, “This first of its kind, in-depth report is a significant contribution to ensuring the inclusive, sustainable growth of the sector. Through its sponsorship, It’s yet another example of how the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is leading in so many ways in advancing global Travel and Tourism.”

The data converges economic metrics with crucial issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, energy use and composition, freshwater use, air pollution and resource use as well as age, gender, and wage profiles of different employments, as well as harmonised indicators across a wide range of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The comprehensive data reveals the nexus between each dollar generated by Travel & Tourism in the economy and its consequential environmental and social impact.

Key highlights from the research include:

Environmental Impact (highlights):

• The Travel & Tourism sector demonstrates an impressive trend of decoupling its environmental footprint from its GDP growth.
• Key achievements include reductions in the intensity of water usage, greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and material extraction.
• Travel & Tourism’s share of global energy consumption amounted to 10.6% in 2019
• The sector represented 0.9% of total global water consumption in 2019
• Travel & Tourism’s material footprint accounts for 5-8% of global material extraction
• The report’s monitoring extends to pollutants such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ammonia, and nitrogen oxides, among others.

Importantly, the data tracks the sector’s performance towards 15 UN Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting its commitment to a more equitable and sustainable world.

The prime objective of this groundbreaking work is to elevate the accuracy and pertinence of sector-specific data, setting the trajectory for future initiatives and realigning with global sustainability milestones.

WTTC and STGC remain committed to cultivating cooperation and conversation among all industry stakeholders.

About SABATINI gin
Sabatini Gin is a premium London Dry Gin produced through a handcrafted method, both in the distillation process and in its quest to fulfill very particular and refined product specifications, such as the presence of wild fennel and lemon verbena in the aromatic blend. The project started in 2015 from an idea by Filippo, Enrico, Niccolò, and Ugo Sabatini, who are all connected by the bond of family and their land. Most of the botanicals are wild plants harvested mainly on the family’s own land and in the surrounding area, whereas Juniper, renowned for its excellent quality, is harvested in various other parts of the Tuscan region. On the nose, Sabatini Gin appears with lovely fresh herb with hints of Tuscan countryside Then, on the palate, it turns up with a full body but not heavy with the juniper beautifully balanced by the balsamic wild fennel, the fresh lemon verbena and thyme. The final is long and smooth with all the botanicals combining to give a sophisticated finish. Sabatini just launched its 00 Sabatini Gin, made for those wishing to appreciate gin’s taste with alcohol free option. Sabatini Gin is distributed in Thailand by Global Food Products.

S Hotels Embarks on Major Renovation for SAii Resorts in Southern Thailand - TRAVELINDEX - TOP25HOTELS.comPhuket, Thailand, November 3, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / S Hotels and Resorts PCL, the global hospitality company from Singha Estate PCL, has announced a major USD 27 million renovation of its resorts in Thailand and Fiji, including an investment of more than THB 500m (approx. USD 14.2m) to reimagine the design, facilities and guest experiences at its three SAii Resorts in Thailand – SAii Phi Phi Island Village, SAii Laguna Phuket, and SAii Koh Samui Choengmon – and FJD 28.5m (approx. USD 12.5m) to upgrade Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort.

First introduced in 2019, SAii Resorts is S Hotels & Resorts’ homegrown upper-upscale resort brand which specialises in sustainable and free-spirited lifestyle hospitality. The name “SAii” derives from the Thai word for “sand,” and the trio of SAii Resorts in Thailand offer some of the kingdom’s finest beachfront stays. SAii Phi Phi Island Village and SAii Laguna Phuket have already achieved Green Globe™ Certification for their commitment to conservation, and SAii Koh Samui Choengmon promotes sustainability through a wide range of initiatives, including recycling, water conservation, energy reduction and plastic-free products.

Commencing this year and running until 2025, this new programme of extensive upgrades will encompass almost every touchpoint, including the guestrooms and suites, lobby areas, restaurants, spas, swimming pools and more. Every aspect of these upgrades will embrace SAii Resorts’ natural and responsible philosophy, and Southern Thai arts & crafts, including local pottery, will be incorporated in the design concept.

The renovation of the guest rooms will be undertaken during the low season, so it will not impact upon the resort experience. The newly renovated premium rooms at SAii Laguna Phuket and villas at SAii Phi Phi Island Village will be bookable now for stays from December 2023 onwards, enabling new and returning guests to enjoy the fresh, authentic SAii experience this coming high season.

At SAii Phi Phi Island Village, the Thai-inspired retreat nestled in 70 hectares of coconut groves on Koh Phi Phi Don, the interior décor will reflect the resort’s commitment to marine conservation with playful artworks that represent the underwater world. Intended to let every visitor “Recharge in Your Own Shell,” the refurbishment will enhance the contrast between the original rustic architecture and contemporary interiors, with natural earthy tones to calm the soul and local materials that evoke the spirit of Koh Phi Phi’s roots. The resort’s spacious Thai bungalows will be upgraded with a nautical design concept inspired by island life, with sustainable materials such as bamboo and grass used to craft the outdoor chairs and lamps, and headboard artwork created from the ropes used to tie up boats.

Also being refurbished are the arrival and departure areas, and outdoor infinity pools, with the aim of positioning Koh Phi Phi as a destination-of-choice for eco-conscious, experience-seeking travellers.

At SAii Laguna Phuket, which is nestled between the Andaman Sea and the lagoons on Phuket’s sunset coast, the design will be based on the concept of a traditional lagoon house, updated for the modern era. This will become more than just a place to stay; it will be a resort where experiences, activities and a sense of tranquility can coexist peacefully. Travellers will be transported on a multi-sensory journey through taste, texture and sight, interwoven with elements that tap into Phuket’s heritage. One key aspect of the project will be the launch of SAii Spa, the brand-new holistic lifestyle concept which artfully blends wellness, local Thai culture, anti-aging solutions and smart nutrition, to promote balanced living and celebrate the joy of exploration. A SAii Wellness Concierge will help guests to tailor their own path to happiness and wellbeing through personalized programs, creating a truly transformative experience.

SAii Resorts will redefine the culinary journey with three groundbreaking new food & beverage programs. The “SAiiSational Breakfast” will treat guests to honest, healthy and homemade dishes, with “eat like a local” favorites and nutrient-packed egg dishes from around the globe that support local farmers and communities, while also catering to special dietary requirements. The “Global Authentic Gastronomy” concept showcases original recipes from around the world, offering a blend of simplicity and exceptional taste to ensure that each dish conjures cherished memories and brings lots of smiles. Finally, “Savor Real Thai” will delight diners with the genuine taste of authentic Thai cuisine. Together, these innovative F&B programs will position SAii Resorts as the ultimate destination for foodies.

Following the completion of this extensive renovation project in 2025, S Hotels & Resorts expects to achieve a 15-20% increase in the average daily rate (ADR) at its SAii Resorts in Thailand.

PATA and Visa Finance and Digital Skills Workshops Concluded

PATA and Visa Finance and Digital Skills Workshops Concluded - TRAVELINDEXBangkok, Thailand, October 31, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) is delighted to announce the successful completion of the finance and digital skills workshops for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in tourism, which took place in Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia and the Philippines. These workshops were part of PATA’s collaboration with Visa to build the capacity of tourism businesses in Southeast Asia towards efficient financial management and increased digital literacy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has urged tourism businesses and destinations across the world to build greater resilience and become more innovative and adaptive. To do so, the tourism industry must strive to be robust enough to withstand crises and unexpected events, but also flexible enough to quickly adapt to new circumstances. For SMEs, this includes, for example, learning how to identify and manage risks, effectively manage finances, increase sustainable practices to save costs and stay competitive, and make use of digital tools and platforms to better reach customers and manage operations.

With this in mind, PATA developed an online learning course covering these topics specifically tailored to tourism SMEs. Although they comprise approximately 80% of all tourism businesses, SMEs are often vulnerable – especially in times of crisis – due to lack of capacity, time and resources. The Finance and Digital Skills course was therefore created to assist SMEs in their resilience-building process and increase their capacity to better navigate the post-COVID-19 tourism era.

The course was developed with the support and expertise of Visa and the Practical Business Skills initiative, and it is available for free in six languages on PATA’s Sustainability Resource Centre website.

To take this knowledge further, PATA and Visa implemented in-person workshops in Hanoi, Jakarta, Siem Reap and the Laguna Province with the invaluable support of the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia, the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia, and the Philippine Department of Tourism, respectively. These took place from July to September 2023.

Each workshop consisted of two days, the first focussing on Finance Skills and the second on Digital Skills. The first encompasses topics such as financial management (statements, formulas, financing opportunities, etc.), risk management and financial benefits of sustainability, whereas the digital skills workshop covers business digitalisation, digital marketing and online payments, and cybersecurity.

The last set of workshops happened from September 11-12 in Santa Cruz, Laguna Province, in the Philippines. This workshop had the largest number of attendees, 43 owners and managers of local tourism SMEs, mostly travel agencies and accommodation providers. In total, the Finance and Digital Skills workshops were attended by 120 participants in the four destinations.

According to PATA Chair Peter Semone, “Helping build resilience and increase sustainability in tourism is of great significance to us. We have been advocating for it since before the pandemic, but especially with our Tourism Destination Resilience Programme launched in 2021. Our aim is to ensure that the tourism sector never has to undergo the challenges and hardship witnessed during COVID-19. We are therefore delighted to see the high level of interest of SMEs in becoming part of this initiative, to help them be more resilient and adaptive.”

Patsian Low, Vice President of Inclusive Impact & Sustainability for Asia Pacific at Visa, added, “Visa has long been committed to the digital and financial upskilling of small and micro-businesses worldwide.  Given the importance of tourism in Southeast Asia, we are delighted that our partnership with PATA has supported so many small businesses in tourism in the region to move towards greater digitalisation and financial empowerment.  Our partnership with PATA is just one example of how Visa uplifts everyone, everywhere by being the best way to pay and be paid.”
