Global Tourism Economy Forum Celebrates Opening of China-Italy Year of Culture & Tourism

Macao (Macao SAR) – February 5, 2020 (travelindex.com) – As part of the activities held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Italy diplomatic ties, the China-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism 2020 opened in Rome, Italy on 21st January to promote bilateral exchanges and constructive collaboration between the two countries, with the aim to further strengthen the bond between the two peoples. The event coincided with the upcoming 9th Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF), hosted in partnership with Italy. To mark this occasion, Ms Pansy Ho, Vice Chairman & Secretary-General of GTEF, graced the opening ceremony as the guest representative of GTEF and gave a speech at the China-Italy Tourism Forum to share insights into China-Italy strategic cooperation in the development of tourism, setting the scene for creative and constructive flow of discussions to come. Meanwhile, the Global Tourism Economy Research Centre (GTERC) also rang up the curtain on the pre-GTEF roadshow activities, bringing together ministers and industry leaders from participating countries in Rome.

Entitled ‘Heritage and Tourism – China-Italy Cultural and Tourism Cooperation’, the China-Italy Tourism Forum aimed to boost the bilateral partnership in order to promote tourism and the common ground of profound cultural heritage that’s found in both countries. Chaired by Francesco Rutelli, the Italian coordinator of the Sino-Italian cultural cooperation, the forum received congratulatory letters from both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Italian President Sergio Mattarella. Chinese Minister of Culture and Tourism Luo Shugang joined Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities Dario Franceschini to deliver opening speeches in the Forum.

Following the opening ceremony, Dean of the China Tourism Research Institute Dai Bin presented the Report on China-Italy Tourism Cooperation and Exchanges, offering food for thought for attending industry leaders to shape the agenda for the ‘new era of tourism cooperation based on cultural exchanges.’ The Forum was divided into three sessions, probing new possibilities in tightening the Sino-Italian partnership in the pursuit of comprehensive tourist experiences that combine the old and new from the perspectives of heritage conservation, technology and sustainability respectively.

The first session centred on the theme ‘Entwining Heritage & Tourism Exchange.’ Leading the discussion on the importance of world heritage in promoting tourism was GTEF Vice Chairman and Secretary-General Pansy Ho, who was joined by CEO of Ctrip Jane Sun; Director and General Manager of Overseas Chinese Town Holdings Limited Yao Jun; Italian Undersecretary of Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities Lorenza Bonaccorsi; General Director of Museums of the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Tourism (MIBAC), Antonio Lampis; and Chairperson of FICO Foundation Andrea Segrè in a fruitful dialogue on the rejuvenation and sustainability of history, heritage and culture. ‘Macao is a textbook case of cultural diversification, which makes the city the perfect stage for the annual GTEF events. We have come a long way in building up holistic tourism on a robust economy,’ said Pansy Ho in her speech. ‘We must impart the idea of tourism as a means of passing down heritage and culture, as opposed to mere entertainment, to the younger generation. Through the tourist experience, we are passing on the torch of civilisation. In the future, our job is to engage young people through innovation, thereby nurturing in them the genuine love for our heritage and culture, and eventually a sense of national pride. I think this is the challenge facing the culturally rich nations of China and Italy.’

As a leading international exchange platform dedicated to the promotion of sustainable development of tourism, the Global Tourism Economy Forum strives to convene in Macao global policy makers, scholars, industry leaders, entrepreneurs and young professionals to catalyse discussions on the opportunities and challenges facing the global tourism economy, with a focus on China. The 9th GTEF is slated to open in Macao in October 2020. With its strategic position, Macao is a ‘Centre of World Tourism and Leisure’, and an integral city of the Greater Bay Area. To commemorate 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Italy, the GTEF has invited Italy, the first G7 member to participate in the ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative, to join the featured Chinese Province Gansu, a strategic bastion on the ancient Silk Road and ‘One Belt One Road’, on a cultural journey where the heritages of two great civilisations entwine as a prelude to a tightened bilateral partnership between China and Italy in tourism development.

New Partnership Leading the Way to Elephant-friendly Future in Koh Lanta.

New Partnership Leading the Way to Elephant-friendly Future in Koh Lanta.

Koh Lanta (Thailand) – February 5, 2020 (travelindex.com) – Eco-tourism Recreation Koh Lanta has reopened its gates as Following Giants, a truly elephant-friendly venue.

In partnership with leading animal welfare charity, World Animal Protection, Following Giants is now offering a better life for elephants and a genuine, ethical elephant experience for visitors.

Here visitors spend time with elephants that have the freedom to roam the forest, graze, and bathe in the river, mud, and dust while socialising with each other.

The elephants lead the way, not forced to perform, give rides, bathe with or interact with people. Because elephants are wild animals, and while they may look happy, if they are in close interaction with people they will be suffering.

In 2017 Charae ‘Ray’ Sangkaow, the owner of Eco-tourism Koh Lanta, made contact with World Animal Protection with the intention of transitioning his existing elephant tourism and trekking camp into an elephant-friendly business model.

Ray grew up around elephants from the age of six and is the fourth generation of his family to live with and care for elephants. His deep love for elephants fueled his dream to provide these gentle giants with the best possible quality of life. This led him to World Animal Protection and the transition of his trekking camp into a high-welfare venue that’s dedicated to the wellbeing of elephants.

Following Giant’s staff and World Animal Protection worked together to develop the venue’s infrastructure and conduct training to ensure the new venue is a success for elephants and visitors alike.

Located high in the lush green mountains of Koh Lanta, where wild rainforests and rows of rubber trees are home to Asian water monitors, flying lemurs, crab-eating macaques and 134 species of birds who all share this idyllic tropical paradise with the elephants.

Visitors can see elephants in their natural habitat, going about their daily life in peace and harmony, uninterrupted and simply living the life they were born to live.

The main activity is a jungle walk where they can follow elephants through the rainforest, allowing the elephants to lead the way. This is the perfect opportunity for people to see how elephants interact and socialise with each other in a truly natural way.

Visitors can also take part in reforestation activities, such as planting seedlings and making ‘seed bombs’ that are then catapulted across the land with a slingshot. This all helps in ensuring the forest is replenished with native foliage – an essential part of an elephant’s diet.

Mahouts are integral to the physical and emotional wellbeing of elephants’, so World Animal Protection supported the mahouts at Following Giants by providing essential training to ensure the elephants are in the best possible hands. As part of their training they spent a week at Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) in Sukhothai where they learned all aspects of elephant care in an observation-only sanctuary, they also learned a variety of positive elephant training methods and shadowed vets at Krabi Elephant Hospital to learn basic elephant first aid.

Guides and office staff have all been trained to help educate visitors on elephant behavior and history to help them to explain why the observation-only model is the most ethical way to experience elephants.

Visitors to Following Giants will discover a lush jungle environment that welcomes them into a world where elephants are living free. To watch the elephants in their natural habitat, where elephants are simply being elephants, visitors can enjoy a bird’s-eye view from the tree house built into the treetops or head to one of the two observations decks. The elephants also have a brand new pool where they can bathe and play and get some respite from the heat of their jungle home. And our visitor education centre gives everyone the chance to learn more about these gentle giants and the venue’s history and there is also a nursery where anyone can take part in making seeds bombs to help replenish the elephant’s food source.

Following Giants is the second transition by World Animal Protection of an elephant riding camp to a high-welfare, elephant-friendly venue in Thailand following the successful transition of ChangChill in Chiang Mai.

World Animal Protection is an international non-profit animal welfare organization that has been in operation for over 50 years and is working towards a world where animal welfare matters and animal cruelty has ended.

King of Spain Signals Strong Support for UNWTO Tourism Ambitions

King of Spain Signals Strong Support for UNWTO Tourism Ambitions

Madrid (Spain) – February 3, 2020 (travelindex.com) – His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain joined the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for a special gala dinner in Madrid last night, further strengthening the support and commitment of Spain to sustainable tourism development.

Held to mark the 40th anniversary of FITUR, one of the world’s leading tourism trade fair and the first one to be held every year, the dinner also saw Ministers from around the world join public and private sector leaders to celebrate tourism’s status as a key pillar of the global sustainable development agenda.

This is the first time UNWTO and FITUR have hosted a royal dinner and comes just weeks after UNWTO and the Government of Spain ensured tourism was part of the conversation at the COP25 UN Climate Summit, also held in Madrid.

UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, thanked His Majesty and the Government of Spain for their strong commitment to UNWTO’s mission: “Your presence is an inspiration and a further reminder of our shared responsibility to continue improving tourism for the benefit of all. UNWTO is privileged to be based in Spain, a true world leader in tourism, and Madrid is also home to FITUR, a platform that brings tourism leaders together every year and sets the international agenda for our sector and its role in the world”.

HRH King Felipe VI commended UNWTO on its work to place tourism at the centre of sustainable development, adding Spain is proud to host the United Nations specialized agency for responsible and inclusive tourism.

He said: “The tourism sector is a source of wealth and employment, it is a tool for social cohesion, for the consolidation of the population, for fighting against climate change and inequality; It is an accelerator in the achievement of the SDGs and digital transformation.”

Also yesterday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced his support for UNWTO’s plans to host a Global Tourism Forum. “The Davos of tourism”, as Mr Sánchez labeled it, will have its first edition in the final months of this year. This event shows the commitment of UNWTO’s host country to fostering tourism for sustainable development, underscoring the sector’s contribution to the 2030 Agenda against the backdrop of the Decade for Action, with just ten remaining years to achieve the Agenda’s Global Goals.

The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative is ground-breaking and ambitious in its goals. It aims to reduce the amount of plastic pollution caused by the tourism sector. To achieve this vision, tourism companies and destinations will be required to make a set of concrete and actionable commitments by 2025, including to:

Eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and items by 2025;
Take action to move from single-use to reuse models or reusable alternatives by 2025;
Engage the value chain to move towards 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable;  Take action to increase the amount of recycled content across all plastic packaging and items used;  Commit to collaborate and invest to increase the recycling and composting rates for plastics;  Report publicly and annually on progress made towards these targets.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “The Global Tourism Plastics Initiative is a unique opportunity for tourism companies and destinations to step forward and lead the global effort addressing plastic pollution. Frontrunning tourism companies and destinations will set quantifiable targets as part of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative and accelerate the transformation of the tourism sector towards more integrated solutions and circular business models.”

The Initiative is a key activity of the Sustainable Tourism Programme of the One Planet Network and it acts as the interface for the tourism sector of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

The New Plastics Economy Programme Manager Gerald Naber said: “The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment unites more than 450 businesses, governments and others behind a clear vision of a circular economy for plastics. We welcome the launch of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, led by UNEP and UNWTO, which unites the tourism sector behind this vision for a world in which plastic never becomes waste or pollution. It will be a challenging journey, but through concerted action, we can eliminate the plastics we don’t need and innovate, so the plastics we do need can be safely and easily circulated – keeping them in the economy and out of the environment.”

The Director of UN Environment’s Economy Division Director, Ms. Ligia Noronha, added: “Plastic pollution is one of the major environmental challenges of our time, and tourism has an important role to play in contributing to the solution. Through the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, tourism companies and destinations are supported so they can innovate, eliminate and circulate the way they use plastics.”

About the One Planet network Sustainable Tourism Programme
The One Planet Sustainable Tourism Programme has the overall objective to enhance the sustainable development impacts of the tourism sector by 2030, by developing, promoting and scaling up sustainable consumption and production practices that boost the efficient use of natural resources while producing less waste and addressing the challenges of climate change and biodiversity. The Sustainable Tourism Programme is part of the One Planet network, a multi-stakeholder partnership to implement SDG 12 on Sustainable Consumption and Production.

About the UN Environment Programme
The UN Environment Programme is the leading global voice on the environment. It provides leadership and encourages partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

About the Ellen MacArthur Foundation
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation was launched in 2010 with the aim of accelerating the transition to the circular economy. Since its creation, the charity has emerged as a global thought leader, putting the circular economy on the agenda of decision-makers around the world. The charity’s work focuses on seven key areas: insight and analysis; business; institutions, governments, and cities; systemic initiatives; circular design; learning; and communications.

About the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment
The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment unites businesses, governments, and other organisations behind a common vision and targets to address plastic waste and pollution at its source. Signatories include companies representing 20% of all plastic packaging produced globally, as well as governments, NGOs, universities, industry associations, investors, and other organisations. The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment is led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme.

The role of tourism in the new European Green Deal was highlighted at the FITUR trade fair. On the back of the recent launch of the Green Deal, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) invited Ministers of Tourism from across Europe and representatives from the European Parliament and the European Travel Commission (ETC) to Madrid for a high-level conversation on the vital role the tourism sector will play if the ambitious sustainability goals are to be met.

The Green Deal will form an integral part of the Commission’s strategy to implement the UN’s 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals and pledges to make Europe the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050. Recognizing the role that tourism will play in achieving this, UNWTO used the occasion of FITUR to provide a platform for EU and non-EU stakeholders, including representatives from both the public and private sectors. Established at the start of a new five-year period for the European Commission, this platform will advocate for tourism to be a central part of the Green Deal.

The tourism sector has an obligation to use its unique power to lead the response to the climate emergency and ensure responsible growth.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “The tourism sector has an obligation to use its unique power to lead the response to the climate emergency and ensure responsible growth. UNWTO is committed to accelerating progress towards low carbon emission tourism, and I am delighted to see that, in this regard, UNWTO and the European Commission are on the same page.

The Secretary of State for Tourism of Spain, the country that hosts UNWTO, Isabel Oliver, added: “A more prominent presence in the political structure of the European Union would allow the importance of tourism to be put on the agenda as a lever to achieve the challenges that European policy has identified, including the Green Deal.

The FITUR event also provided a platform for Croatia, which currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, to present its priorities for tourism. Frano Matusic, Secretary of State for Tourism of Croatia, addressed his fellow Ministers and public and private sector leaders, highlighting his country’s commitment to sustainability and low-carbon growth.

Mr. Matusic, said: “Tourism is a significant economic factor in the world GDP, but at the same time it affects the preservation of cultural heritage, the environment, the labor market, infrastructure, etc. As these challenges are common to all Member States, it is important to address these issues in a systematic manner at the both European and global level. Implementation and promotion of sustainable development policies are the backbone of Croatia’s EU Council Presidency in the field of tourism, and Croatia will therefore continue to strengthen its co-operation initiative precisely to ensure tourism’s success in the future.

According to the latest UNWTO data, the EU28 Member States received 577 million international tourists in 2019, a 3% increase on the previous year. In 2018, receipts generated by international tourism generated 407 billion euros across all 28 states, around 33% of the world total. The UNWTO data also shows that Europe continues to be the leading global region for tourist numbers, welcoming 51% of all arrivals in 2019.

The role of tourism and investment in African development took centre stage at the FITUR trade fair in Madrid this week as sector leaders joined the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the 11th edition of INVESTOUR (Tourism Investment and Business Forum for Africa) which saw the participation of over 20 African Ministers and Heads of delegations.

Supported by Casa Africa (Representing the Spanish Government), the International Tourism Fair of Madrid (FITUR) as UNWTO’s official partners and in collaboration with Côte D’Ivoire, this latest meeting of Investour focused on the continent’s potential on creative industries as well as on the potential benefits of diversifying the tourism sector, in particular as a means of driving rural development. Against the backdrop of FITUR, the round table discussion explored the untapped potential of gastronomy tourism and the growing African fashion industry, particularly with regards to attracting international tourists. In addition, a session was also dedicated to the presentation of 10 projects aiming at the development of tourism in various countries in Africa, such as South Africa, Zambia, Comoros, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Côte d’Ivoire.

The creative industries, including a thriving fashion industry, culture and gastronomy are all increasingly relevant ‘pull factors’

The forum came on the back of the UNWTO General Assembly unanimously approving its Agenda for Africa 2030, a roadmap and strategic framework for tourism for sustainable development and inclusive growth. At the same time, the 11th edition of INVESTOUR was held during UNWTO’s Year of Tourism and Rural Development, with this theme the main focus of discussions between tourism leaders from both the public and private sectors.

Opening INVESTOUR 2020, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “The creative industries, including a thriving fashion industry, culture and gastronomy are all increasingly relevant ‘pull factors’. They are encouraging visitors to see another side to Africa. Investment in these sectors will pay dividends, not just for investors themselves but, equally or more important, also for African society as a whole.

Also during FITUR, UNWTO released its latest data on international tourist numbers and trends. The data shows that international arrivals to African destinations reached 71 million in 2019 and grew by 4% when compared with the previous year. This trend is expected to continue over the years ahead, and UNWTO has stated its commitment to supporting its African destinations grow their tourism sectors responsibly and sustainably. Next month, Côte d´Ivoire will host the 1st UNWTO Global Tourism Investment Forum in Africa, a landmark event for the continent and its tourism sector.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is closely monitoring developments related to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), both in China and worldwide and is cooperating closely with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Since the very start of the emergency, the Chinese authorities have acted swiftly and decisively. UNWTO expresses its solidarity with the Chinese people, its government and its tourism sector at these challenging times.

In recent years, China has emerged as a true global tourism leader, both as a source market and as a leading destination in itself, providing livelihoods for millions of people across the country. And tourism will offer a valuable lifeline as China recovers and rebuilds from this setback, just as the sector has proven its resilience many times before.

The responsibility of tourism

During times of crisis, tourism has to live up to its responsibility as an integral part of wider society. The sector must put people and their wellbeing first.

The cooperation of the tourism sector will be vital in stopping the spread of the virus and limiting its impact on people and communities. Tourists also have a responsibility to inform themselves before they travel in order to limit the threat of transmission, and they should follow the recommendations of the WHO and their own national health authorities.

Tourism is vulnerable to the effects of public health emergencies and is already being affected by this outbreak. However, it is too early to fully estimate the impacts this outbreak will have.

UNWTO as the specialized UN agency for tourism will continue supporting WHO, the lead UN agency for the management of this outbreak by advising and providing tourism specific guidance.

Saint Ange Tourism Report – 27th January 2020

Saint Ange Tourism Report – 27th January 2020

Victoria, Mahe (Seychelles) – February 1, 2020 (travelindex.com) – As we end January of 2020 the time is opportune to reflect on air access for Seychelles and the needed drive for visibility for tourism destinations.

On the airline front their are more questions than answers and the ball lies squarely in the Seychelles court to decide how it plays the needed delicate game with airline companies who do not depend on Seychelles for their livelihood, but who are strategic partners of the islands as far as air transportation goes. Edelweiss with its direct flights from Switzerland to Seychelles may be short lived tour operators are saying. The numbers have been rather encouraging, and the shortness of the flight a bonus – so what is wrong? CONDOR linking Seychelles with direct flights to Frankfurt is starting to question the need for its second flight. This is what transpires out of Germany. Seychelles worked hard to get this second flight from one of the island’s main tourism market. Is Seychelles going the extra mile to ensure that this needed flight is maintained? Both Edelweiss from Switzerland and CONDOR from Germany are providing what is described by the island’s private sector trade as needed air access and everyone is hoping that as the ITB Tourism Trade Fair in Germany is now on our doorstep every step will be taken to mitigate any decision being discussed that could jeopardise the Seychelles tourism industry. Germany, Switzerland and Austria remain today ‘a block’ that is seen as one of the main tourism source markets after France.

Then we can look at Air France with its direct non-stop flights to Paris. This is the only carrier linking Seychelles with a direct flight to its main tourism source market. It will be flying only in what is believed the peak holiday season. France is to a degree an all-year round source market and Seychelles has all to gain if Air France can be encouraged to stay the course. But this can only come a with partnership approach to push the airline as the prefered partnerr on that run. It is direct, it is non-stop, it links the islands with its main tourism source market – do we need more justification?

British Airways, with their needed direct link with Great Britain. This lifeline took years of discussions to pull off. The question on everyone’s mind is if we are doing enough for this strategic partner?

Europe and Great Britain is where the Seychelles private sector trade has invested heavily for many many years to develop the market and to keep it active. The two airlines are needed partners and every step that needs to be taken should be taken to ensure long term togetherness as working partners.

Kenya Airways, the faithful partner that stuck with Seychelles even when things got tough. They continue to work with Seychelles opening up Africa and the world to Seychelles alongside Ethiopian Airlines. Are we working by their side as partners?

Air Austral is that link with what is termed a secondary market. They are needed as is Air Mauritius for these two Vanlla Islands partners.

The Middle East carriers – Emirates, Etihad and Qatar are providing a one stop access to virtually any where in the world. They are needed and must be heard when they raise what is seen as challenges.

Air Seychelles with their flights to South Africa and India, both important tourism markets for the islands. Can more be done and should mere be done?

A meeting with air access providers is needed. Seychelles needs to hear the challenges they have. They are strategic partners and should not be left to fend by themselves. The meeting is needed today before the main Tourism Fair season gets underway.

Then the big question of COSTA Cruises. Has Seychelles analysed the void it will create when it drops the islands from March with no plans of returning for the 2020 and 2021 season. We have known this was being discussed and we personally wrote about it months ago in this publication. This is, and this will be seen as a major tourism set back. The port and DMCs, the taxi operators will be hit hard as will be the art and craft vendors and the free independent guides. Waiting for it to return by itself is not possible and it is working as a block in the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands that can bring some positive results. Cruise ships in Poart can be further developed as one fifty percent of the passengers are not getting out a destinations. We need to develop this temporary village attraction at the foot of the ship and pust for them to see Seychelles or recommend Seychelles to friends and family. This is the same work that is done at a tourism trade fair.

Visibility is the next interesting point worth discussing as we start this new year. Many tourism succesful indexes and surveys are being released and many of our island nations and countries on the main land of Africa are missing the the boat. The main reason is visibility and we seem unable to overcome this shortfall. Yet we have capable and dedicated press personalities in Africa over and above the African Tourism Board (ATB) sitting by our sides. Visibility is a needed ingredient for success by tourism destinations. Then the big challenge is for the continent to start rewriting its own narrative. We make news for all the possible negatives, but positive news does not make it to our tourism source markets because it is seen as not news worthy. Rewrite our narrative is today important and a sure part for success.

Seychelles to host the 63rd Commission for Africa (CAF)

Seychelles has been confirmed as the country to host the 63rd Commission for Africa Meeting (CAF) in 2020.

The decision was reached after member states at the 62nd Commission meeting held on the sidelines of the just ended 23rd UNWTO General Assembly accepted the request of Seychelles to host the important gathering of African Tourism leaders.

The chairman of the Commission, Kenya’s Najib Balala, read out the draft resolution and after no objection from members, he went ahead to move the motion.

The Commission of Africa Meetings are held every year as part of UNWTO’s statutory events.

The UNWTO Regional Commission for Africa is the major institutional platform where ministries in charge of tourism discuss the latest trends of the sector at the continental and global level and the implementation of their program of work.
The country in conjunction with the UNWTO will announce the date soon.

The Minister of Tourism, Marine Ports and Aviation Hon. Didier Dogley, who was leading Seychelles delegation, said that “the island is looking forward to hosting the tourism community during the commission meeting.”

St.Ange takes center stage on SBC’s tête-à-tête programme with Patsy Canaya

Alain St.Ange recently took center stage on SBC’s tête-à-tête programme with Patsy Canaya. The Q & A session will air on the night of Monday 27th January right after the main news in Creole.

Pointed questions ranged from the infamous Padayachy saga, the ongoing defamation court case, the much anticipated upcoming elections which are dividing the population, and One Seychelles’ readiness for the race, as well as the challenges the Party believes the Nation is struggling to overcome, and the seemingly never ending UNWTO election court case.

Taking advantage of important platforms such as this bolsters the the One Seychelles Party’s aim and determination to promote transparency and public confidence in their Leadership. For those who have missed them, a series of short clips have been posted recently by some of the Party members discussing pertinent issues that the Country is now grappling with.

Kempinski Lady in Red celebrates its 10th anniversary

Providing a genuinely personalised and intuitive guest experience based on cultural empathy, guest intelligence and an understanding of each individual guest’s needs is the role of the iconic Lady in Red, a highly emblematic position created by Kempinski Hotels ten years back. As this unique brand ambassador welcomes guests in each hotel of the elegant luxury hotel brand around the globe, every hotel of Kempinski Hotels pays tribute to the Lady in Red this year.

In Seychelles, Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare will surprise guests with various birthday activities from 17 to 26 of January 2020. Festivities began Friday night, with an elegant cocktail reception beside the hotel’s private lagoon. The event was attended by hotel guests and representatives of the travel industry, who feasted on a plethora of canapés and appetisers inspired by Lady in Red’s keen interest in craftsmanship and gastronomy. During the event it was announced that the luxury hotel would make an SCR 10,000 contribution – on behalf of Lady in Red – to President’s Village Children’s Home in Port Glaud.

‘A Kempinski Lady in Red should be more than just an icon of the hospitality industry,’ said hotel general manager, Hany Abdelmoneim. ‘She is an ambassador of the hotel and the community in which she serves. When asked how they would like to celebrate their ten-year anniversary, our Ladies in Red said that they wanted to contribute to the empowerment of young women in Seychelles. We were very touched by their noble request and are delighted to support President’s Village in their care and support of young girls in our community.’

‘On behalf of the residents and staff of the Presidents Village, we would like to convey our sincere gratitude towards your establishment and its management,’ said Sylvie Ernesta of the National Council for Children. ‘It is always an encouragement for us when partner organisations recognise the work we are doing to empower and push our young girls in a positive direction.’

Conceived by Kempinski in 2009, the first Lady in Red appeared at a general manager’s meeting in Geneva. She wore a red haute-couture dress tailored especially for the occasion and appeared on stage to the tune of Chris de Burgh’s Lady in Red. Today there are more than 150 Ladies in Red gracefully representing Kempinski across their portfolio of luxury hotels.

On arrival in one of Kempinski’s 79 hotels, the Lady in Red is instantly recognizable: Dressed in a striking and elegant tailor-made red outfit that reflects the sartorial traditions in each destination, the Ladies in Red evoke an authentic sense of place and occasion showcasing the cultural nuance and classic European elegance for which Kempinski is known worldwide. Dedicated to please and educated to entertain, these brand ambassadors are alert to any opportunity to go one step beyond to craft unforgettable experiences for well-travelled guests, acting as both the perfect host and a trusted companion during their stay with Kempinski Hotels. As they play a pivotal role in every guest stay, they are teamplayers who are very well connected to their colleagues at the Front Office, in the Food & Beverage department and with the concierge working closely side by side with them.

“The Lady in Red is a local expert who knows everything there is to know about our hotels and the destination”, explains Benedikt Jaschke, Chief Quality Officer Kempinski Hotels and member of the Management Board. “Whether it’s a special anniversary celebration, a surprise proposal or a once-in-a-lifetime family holiday, they draw upon their passion for craftsmanship, gastronomy and local culture to ensure visitors are well-equipped to live unforgettable memories every time they visit.”

“Essentially, the Lady in Red was meant to replace the rather old fashioned guest relations position, which was not iconic at all”, adds Benedikt Jaschke. “We were looking for the extra sparkle of a unique personality with unique responsibilities who is easy to recognise.”

Coming from all walks of life, Kempinski’s Ladies in Red represent more than 30 countries. There are even some Gentlemen in Red, for example at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin, which can be recognised by their red tie and red socks.

“Indeed, a Lady in Red is no mere wallflower”, says Edwina Alcindor, Lady in Red at the Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare. “We are approachable, attentive and curious, but discrete and cultivated at the same time, good-mannered, polite, but also discerning. We all share the Kempinski perspective on luxury that it must be rare, must be felt and must be original. In fact we are always ready to pick up on small hints that might reveal how we can add a dash of magic to a guest’s stay.”

Luxury through Monochrome…is it the Future?

Luxury through Monochrome…is it the Future?

Bangkok (Thailand) – January 31, 2020 (travelindex.com ) – Innovation, Concept, Profit, a potent combination that ensures the success of a restaurant; there is no better at it than lebua Hotels & Resorts, and its forward-thinking CEO Deepak Ohri. Forever trailblazing, the launching of Sirocco – an alfresco Mediterranean dining establishment, then the floating day club – a global first, and now Mezzaluna – going back to black and white in a digital era – may showcase pioneering thinking, but ultimately it displays a keen willingness to ensure that guest experience is paramount.

It takes a mere moment to create memories; the ethos behind the lebua Hotels & Resorts brand. And here, the focus is to craft experiences that are unique and special; case in point, the Two-Starred MICHELIN Mezzaluna. An innovation in its own league, this is the first restaurant in the world to use French techniques with Japanese ingredients to create an outstandingly special cuisine; a signature if you will, and vastly different to the offerings of other MICHELIN-Starred restaurants who have the contrary. The difficulty in the rarity of the ingredients, availability of the ingredients, and complexities of cooking them in the traditional Gallic way only serves to showcase the immense expertise residing within this establishment; despite this vast divergence in concept to the norm, however, Mezzaluna serves authentically French cuisine only.

And such an exceptional proposition needs a home to live up to the expectations of its cuisine. With the rise in social media there is a trend to create stunningly beautiful plates for the sake of aesthetics; the gross disparity leads to plates being more instagrammable than edible, akin to a fake Louis Vuitton that may appear impressive but soon lacks in the minutae. However, at Mezzaluna the effort is spanned across the whole journey – ambience, details, cuisine – and as such the key to redesigning its interior was to take it to the basics. Stripped back to a black and white palette, the classic and timeless juxtaposition reflects the essence of the food served to enhance guests’ emotions.

Playing with light and showcasing the spectacular surroundings, Tim Kobe – the legendary designer who devised the first Apple stores – and Ohri, have created a space that enriches the experience of Mezzaluna; a place where you enter through intricate iron gates, a place where you dramatically waltz up a sweeping staircase, a place where you can look up and watch the rippling reflection of the Chao Phraya as the moonlit mirror illuminates the room (intelligently, 30% of the light in Mezzaluna will come from this river)… Magical.

As I sit in the restaurant in its current incarnation, I am thrilled to be able to exclusively preview a refreshing take on restaurant design; giving the guest a full and cohesive culinary voyage. Mezzaluna will be refurbished from 1st to 30th June, and after a remarkable 30 days it will reopen on 1st July – I for one can’t wait for a reemergence of the unwaveringly stylish black and white era when Kodak was a moment; I will be catching that very moment at Mezzaluna.

In a colorful or monochrome environment, the real hero at any restaurant is the food. And in food like in history some figures claim legend status while leaving others, even those of great cultural and culinary contribution, behind as mere footnotes. Ansel Adams monochrome photography set the standard for black and white photo prints, will the new, monochrome, Mezzaluna herald a new era in luxury?
