Saint Ange Tourism Report – 27th August 2018

Saint Ange Tourism Report – 27th August 2018

Victoria, Mahe (Seychelles) – August 27, 2018 (travelindex.com) – Seychelles was this last week recognised as sitting firmly amongst the 30 Most Magical Islands on the Planet. Congratulations to Eric Boulanger, the General Manager of the resort for having had his property make that list and to fly the Seychelles flag so high. The good news for Seychelles tourism is that this report by Ashley Moor comes out just as the Seychelles’ hospitality industry is again being thrown into the spotlight with five Seychelles resorts being bestowed with a prestigious travel award in China. As we say congratulations to these five resorts we must note with interest that it is always those properties who are visible that remain relevant. Today it is congratulations to Four Seasons Resort Seychelles, Fregate Island Private, Maia Luxury Resort & SPA, North Island and Six Senses Zil Pasyon, for being featured among the recipients of the 2018 Conde Nast Traveler China Gold List awards.

Tourism remains the needed catalyse for economic transformation & consolidation

Seychelles has left behind the day when key economic industries were coconuts, cinnamon or vanilla. For many countries it is still industrialisation that is their current “buzzword”. This gives these countries the chance of hiring a massive workforce as they convert raw materials to finished products for sale, providing exports for the country. The size of the Seychelles and its limited workforce, moved the islands to embrace tourism, ever since the opening of the international airport in 1971. Governments collect a substantial amount of revenue through direct and indirect taxes from industries in countries where industrialisation is the name of the game, which ensures at the same time, their ability to provide employment for their people.

Daniel Marandu writing in The Citizen of Tanzania is nowadays joined by many a writer to refer to the era of industrialisation as the coal-era, as they go further to describe the world of today as the cool-era. This is because the world is living in an era where artificial intelligence embedded in machines have replaced the majority of the workforce as we also sit preoccupied with re-imagining the future.

These experts believe that if industrialization is to connote significant opportunities for the workforce, then today the service industry and knowledge economy must be part of that future “industrialization”.

David Marandu says that in Africa, right in front of us stands the hospitality industry with endless opportunities, and yet the Eiffel Tower – a manmade steel structure – attracts more tourists (about 7 million annually), admittedly for a very short time period, than our country does (1.5 million tourists annually) notwithstanding the well-known attractions.

A recent PwC publication Hotels Outlook: 2018-2022, provides an overview of the trends and prospects in the hotel industry in South Africa, Nigeria, Mauritius, Kenya and Tanzania, and identifies some of the challenges for the hotel sector.

The report highlights that room revenue in Nigeria and Mauritius showed double digit growth, but Kenya and Tanzania showed declines in revenues. The decline in Kenya was a consequence of political challenges following the Supreme Court overruling of the August presidential result, though by December tourist arrivals had rebounded. For Tanzania, it identifies a drop in guest nights in 2017 as resulting in a 5.5 per cent decrease in room revenue compared to 2016.

The report links this decline to various regulatory changes (including the introduction of 18 per cent VAT on tourism services, increased in visa charges for business travel to $200, fixed-rate concession fees for hotels in the national parks – some as high as $59 per person per night), and Government austerity measures.

Looking forward for the next five years, the report projects that hotel revenue growth in Tanzania will rebound and show compound annual increases of 9.1 per cent per annum (marginally behind Kenya (9.6 per cent), but ahead of Mauritius (7.2 per cent) and South Africa (5.6 per cent)) boosted by faster growth in global GDP, more flights and new hotels; but at the same time it notes that higher taxes and rates will remain an impediment to growth – implying that growth would be even higher still were it not for these challenges.

The report notes that over the next five years, seven new major hotels are expected to open in Tanzania (including Rotana, Anantara, City Lodge, Hyatt Regency, Sarovar Portico and Ritz-Carlton) adding 900 rooms by 2019 and 1,200 by 2022, a 16 per cent cumulative gain. This will increase room revenue from $206 million in 2017 to $319 million in 2022 at a projected occupancy rate of 58.5 per cent.

This shows that when investments are coming in, it is a good sign and expectations are high in the industry.

Visibility
Knowing that visibility does not come free and one has to pay for it, has prompted many now to embrace “Data analysis and digital marketing” and in so doing, remaining visible and relevant.

One tool to better understand the tourism market, is big data analysis and digital marketing. The current data gathered does not indicate the number of visitors by country, geographical location, age, income bracket, travelers’ feedback et cetera. Collecting the right data will result in accurate and appropriate strategic decisions made from useful information. For example, are the interests of a 20-something tech enthusiast backpacker the same as those of a 60-something pensioner visiting the country? Collecting the right data will enable specialized service offerings leading to diversification and growth in revenue streams.

Costs
A reduction of costs, specifically taxes and fees, which as an example make Tanzania an expensive destination, could also help. In Seychelles airport handling charges, electricity and water charges as well as an across the board VAT on hotel bills for services and room amalgamated together. A reduction in these costs would most likely be offset by increased other direct and indirect taxes generated from the additional economic activity resulting from increased number of tourists.

Another opportunity is to continue to diversify the product. Examples from countries who have taken this step include India (with medical tourism, worth around $3 billion), Singapore (as an educational and a tech-hub), Latvia and Israel (with agro-tourism) Rwanda with business tourism and conferencing, to earn tourist revenues other than the traditional excursions and beach destinations.

Use local products
Its time for Government and the private sector to ensure they are supporting industries integration in the sector. The sector should ensure most of purchases are locally sourced which will increase domestic production and boost supporting industries, obviously with no compromise on quality. This will result to a huge multiplier effect with a positive effect to the economy.

Lastly, local skills and quality of service should be at the top of the agenda to ensure the country hotels and tour companies can compete at the global stage. There is a need to have trained professionals who provide quality service to ensure customer satisfaction – from coffee shops, restaurants to hotels. There is a cry out there that our customer service is poor and displeasing.

The tourism industry is already a top foreign currency earner – but imagine the even greater economic contribution that it would make if we moved the goal posts on visibility, costs and believing in Seychelles, in the Seychellois and in what is produced in Seychelles. This is the prudent path forward for Seychelles and its President.
Africa is the second largest Destination for French Tourists but Seychelles?

France has traditionally been the most important tourism source market for Seychelles. The islands enjoy a direct non-stop service with JOON of Air France and it is known that Africa today is the second largest tourism destination for French Tourists. A recent report by Business Analyst 24 provides a thorough insight into the country’s domestic and outbound tourism industry. The report shades light into the profiles of French tourists and summarizes the key reasons why they travel.

The report offers an in-depth analysis of traveler flows, spending patterns, main destination markets and current and future opportunities for tourism businesses seeking to tap into the French outbound travel market.

Why is Seychelles today not enjoying the expected boom from the France outbound tourism market? The recent report states:-

France is one of the most valuable tourist markets globally and French tourists are considered sophisticated travellers. In particular, France is the 10th largest market in the world in terms of the size of its outbound market and ninth in terms of the size of its domestic market.

Following several years of stagnant economic growth, the outlook for the French economy is positive. Increased consumer confidence is expected to be translated into more international trips; outbound travel is set to grow at a CAGR of 1.5% between 2017 and 2022.

Scope
– Outbound travel is expected to grow at a moderate CAGR of 1.5% between 2017 and 2022.
– Domestic travel will recover by 2020, but then will decline as the French are forecast to favour international trips.
– Europe is the destination of 80.6% of outbound French travellers.
– Africa is the second most visited region by French visitors.
– As the economy is set to grow, businesses are looking for internationalization opportunities, boosting business travel.
– As more players are entering the long haul low cost segment, competition in aviation is set to intensify.

What does Seychelles need to do today? Germany is now once again the main tourism source market followed by France in second place and followed in third place by the UAE.

Ethiopia gets new tourism board

Fitsum Arega, the Chief of Staff of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has been appointed as chairman of the national tourism board.

The appointments fill the vacancy after former Culture and Tourism Minister Hirut Woldemariam sacked the entire board back in April, only to pay the price herself when she was moved from the increasingly important portfolio less than two weeks after she took the controversial decision.

Also on the board is the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Tewolde Gebremariam, the chair of the Addis Ababa Hotel Association Biniam Bisrat and Yacob Melaku, chair of the Ethiopian Tour Operators Association, among others. The new Minister for Culture and Tourism Bizunesh Meseret also serves on the board.

Lensa Mekonnen was appointed as CEO of the ETO and took office on the 06th of August.

Blue Tree, Phuket’s Premier Family Attraction and World-Class Waterpark Unveiled

Blue Tree, Phuket’s Premier Family Attraction and World-Class Waterpark Unveiled

Phuket (Thailand) – August 21, 2018 (travelindex.com) – Phuket’s tourism industry has received a major shot in the arm with the unveiling of Blue Tree Phuket, a USD40 million investment and multi-dimensional destination waterpark and entertainment complex set over 140 rai in Cherng Talay.

Positioned as Phuket’s premier family attraction, Blue Tree is located within easy reach of Phuket’s popular central west coast and will be the island’s first international-standard, fully integrated waterpark and family entertainment complex, placing it at the cutting-edge of a growing demand for inland tourism on the island.

The complex will feature a compelling mix of retail, destination dining, waterpark, beach club, and health and fitness with its star attraction at its centre – Blue Tree Lagoon – designed and built by world-leading US-based water attraction specialists Crystal Lagoons.

Opening in the first quarter 2019, Blue Tree is led by Michael Ayling, former Managing Director of Laguna Phuket, a destination which set a benchmark in Phuket for large-scale, high-quality integrated tourism product, who now embarks on a new pioneering project for the island.

“We are delighted to be announcing what we feel will be a key component in Phuket’s tourism future as we are confident Blue Tree will appeal to families looking for high quality entertainment,” said Mr Ayling.

“Phuket’s tourism market has changed considerably over the past ten years. We now see strong demand for inland attractions driven by Thai families, residents of the island and the growth of the independent-travelling international tourism market. All three markets have one thing in common: a need for high-quality, family-focused entertainment away from the beach. This is what we will deliver,” he said.

Blue Tree Phuket will offer a Water and Entertainment park, a four-storey vertical Beach Club, Fitness Zone, Kid’s Club and multiple retail spaces. In addition, 17 restaurants and food outlets will cater to all tastes and budgets, centred around the complex’s star attraction: Blue Tree Lagoon.

The 17,000-square-metre man-made lagoon has been designed by Crystal Lagoons, who most recently completed a mega inland lagoon project in the family attraction capital of the world, Florida. It is flanked by artificial beaches and offers an aquatic playground for family-friendly and adrenaline-driven activities such as a Slip N Fly, water slides, splash zone and even cliff jumping.

Aside from utilising state-of-the-art technology to maintain water clarity, Blue Tree Lagoon also boasts eco-friendly credentials. Powered by Crystal Lagoons’ sustainable technology, the lagoon uses up to 100 times fewer chemicals and 50 times less energy than conventional swimming pool systems.

Blue Tree has been in development for the past two years, from the master planning stages to partnership selections and management – with environmental sustainability a core component of the project’s DNA and fundamental to its promotion of an active and healthy lifestyle.

“Blue Tree has natural borders. These are thick, mature rubber plantations that surround the project and emphasise the lush tropical environment found throughout the grounds. The name itself is testament to our commitment – a green and blue oasis in the shape of a tree, with deep roots and strong connections to the destination, its heritage and its future,” said Mr Ayling.

“Phuket will always be known for its spectacular sea and sand, but there’s been a clear demand for inland entertainment alternatives for some time now and this will fit the bill, showcasing a lesser known side of Phuket but one that will appeal to both middle class Thai families and Amanpuri guests in one strategically located destination.”

Admission fees will be kept affordable with a pay-and-use concept, while full access to all activities will be priced lower than THB1,000

Saint Ange Tourism Report – 20th August 2018

Saint Ange Tourism Report – 20th August 2018

Victoria, Mahe (Seychelles) – August 21, 2018 (travelindex.com) – Operating Cost continues to hit Seychelles and its tourism industry. Last week the Government announced new increases for electricity, water and sewage on the public at large but spared the businesses from the new increases. This comes over and above increase only months ago which touched everyone including the Business Community. Seychelles is know to be expensive as it is and these new increases will only compound the problems as the ordinary Seychellois will be rallying to call for increases in salary to offset their inflated utility bills.

Holiday survey leaves Seychelles out of the list

A latest survey, this time by Virtuoso has again left Seychelles out of the list of five Top worldwide destinations for October half-term. Included in the top five are Mauritius of the Vanilla Islands group together with Maldives, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa. In Top Worldwide destinations for the festive season we see Maldives and Sri Lanka makes that list of top five. This was for travellers looking to combat the cold December weather by heading to sunnier destinations. Tropical locations like the Maldives and Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean have been selected as popular for their stunning beaches saying they will be fantastic settings for an unusual Christmas dinner. The survey also finds that the high-end British market are programming to also venture to a variety of lesser-visited destinations, particularly in Africa and Asia, including Rwanda, Uganda, Bhutan and Vietnam. This survey for best destinations on Global News was published on 15th August 2018 on Insights eHotelier for luxury travellers are on trends compiled by Virtuoso for Top travel trends for Beach destinations, Family trips, Multigenerational travel, Wellness & spas and Celebration travel / Ultra-luxury and exclusive-use travel.

As expected holiday travel, beach destinations and family trips were the most popular, but why did a destination like Seychelles miss that list, that is entirely based on the core of its tourism market? We see in that survey that travelling with immediate family and multiple generations made the top five, showing the desire to be with family at this time of year, whereas, wellness and spa trips have become more popular as stress levels increase, and they provide a fantastic way to focus on oneself in preparation for the year ahead.
This feedback should worry the Seychelles private sector trade and the Government, that remains the biggest shareholder of that industry through the taxes it collects. Seychelles must never forget that it is proven over and over again that media coverage is a predictor of tourism movements.

More worries for countries depending on tourism

The British holiday makers are flocking to Turkey as the collapse of the Turkish lira means UK tourists can buy a beer for just £1.37 and families can dine out for £35. The currency crisis in Turkey has seen the lira collapse sending prices plummeting. This moved British holidaymakers looking for a bargain break and have been flocking to Turkey where exchange rates mean that for just £500, British tourists can get over 4,000 Turkish lira. Turkey is not a new holiday destination, but the recent developments have brought about a new surge of interest in the destination. The same tourists from the same source markets have a ‘bonanza’, and are rescheduling their dream holidays or their planned holiday of a life time for an opportunity that is today on offer through every tour operator and travel agent.

Coco de Mer medicine hits the market but not by Seychelles

Is it a by-product of the Coco de Mer kernel exported by Seychelles, or is it just a name picked because of its appeal? The Coco de Mer kernel being exported today is resold rightly or wrongly for a number of exceptional medicinal values and can be purchased in powder form, in flakes or in essence and the profit from value added works is being earned by someone else from somewhere else.

A unique product of the Seychelles that should have numbered products accompanied by a “Made in Seychelles” label because of its limited quantity, is sadly today the property of everyone. Yet is has been shown that much can be done using that dried kernel of the Coco de Mer and the Island of Praslin and the Praslinois should be the custodians of many an authentic product of their island by their island. Seychelles is a tourism dependent country and missing out on the opportunity of having its Brand Name “Seychelles” on a product that would be sought after in main tourism source markets right around the world.

Aphrodisiac is today the main source of use for the Coco de Mer, now we see a cough mixture. But at the Praslin Culinary & Arts Fiesta Ice Cream, mousse, flan, parfait and bread were also made and it was appreciated by everyone. It is also known that a unique biscuit could be manufactured from the powder made from the kernel.

In 2014 the Seychelles News Agency reported that finally “A taste of the forbidden fruit – Seychelles coco de mer at the centre of Praslin’s first culinary and arts fiesta” saying that for the first time in Seychelles, the kernel of the coco de mer, the largest nut in the world was the one of the main highlight of a ‘culinary and arts fiesta’ on the archipelago’s second most populated island of Praslin. The event which took place during the weekend from September 5 to 7, is an initiative of the archipelago’s Ministry of Tourism and Culture in collaboration with other partners including the island’s district authorities. Endemic to the Indian Ocean archipelago, apart from Praslin the only other Seychelles island where the coco de mer grows naturally is neighbouring Curieuse, off Praslin’s north western coast.

A unique product of Seychelles
Richard Mathiot, the Principal Lecturer at the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA) who has also been helping the Ministry of Tourism and Culture to spearhead the event, along with other colleagues from the STA explained that they have worked to process the kernel several times using different techniques and have it transformed into an ingredient that can be used in recipes.

Ice Cream, mousse, flan, parfait and bread are some of the delicacies prepared using the coco de mer as one of the main ingredients that were on sale for as low as $0.40 to $0.80. The event held at the Berjaya Praslin Beach Hotel at Cote D’Or, Praslin attracted Seychellois residents and visitors alike who were eager to savour the taste of the forbidden nut”.

Preserve, Protect and Cherish Assumption Island sees first “Eco & Preserve Seychelles walk”

“Preserve, Protect & Cherish Assomption” was the call for a peaceful walk in Seychelles on the 17 August called the “Eco & Preserve Seychelles walk” organised by the same leaders of the successful “Save Grand Police demonstrations”.

The organisers have said that this was “The journey of a thousand miles and it begins with one step” and “Today was that first step…Eco Citizens & Preserve Seychelles”

Mr Patrick Pillay, former Speaker of the Seychelles National Assembly and Leader of the LS Opposition Political Party was also present at this latest peaceful demonstration that was calling on the Government of Seychelles to abandon their proposed Assumption Island Military Base project with India.
