Final Sprint to a Global Standard on Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism

Final Sprint to a Global Standard on Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism - TRAVELINDEX - SUSTAINABLEFIRST.comMarbella, Spain, September 25, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / In line with its commitment to promoting tourism as a catalyst for economic growth, inclusive development, and environmental sustainability, UNWTO is garnering consensus around the Statistical Framework for Measuring Sustainability of Tourism (MST).

The fourth meeting of the Expert Group for MST took place in Marbella – with the collaboration of the Consejería de Turismo, Cultura y Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía, co-financed with European Funds – to consolidate technical progress and articulate governance ambition.

UNWTO Executive Director, Zoritsa Urosevic, said “Andalusia is known for its openness, collaboration and innovation, quite a fitting symbol for this meeting and for our MST endeavour”.

The relevance of measurement for sustainability

MST seeks to establish an internationally recognized reference framework for measuring the economic, social and environmental impacts and dependencies of tourism. Consequently, countries will gain access to reliable and internationally comparable data at both national and subnational levels. This ensures that sustainable initiatives adopt a unified approach and yield a lasting and meaningful impact.

Securing international recognition

UNWTO has followed a UN process that will culminate in the presentation of the Statistical Framework for MST to the United Nations Statistical Commission. The goal is to secure endorsement and thereby elevate it to the status of third statistical standard for tourism.

The framework has undergone numerous consultations, has been fed by the work of nine research teams and over 21 discussion papers, as well as close technical guidance of the MST Editorial Board.

The 4th meeting of the expert group

The meeting convened representatives from Ministries, Statistical Institutes, subnational authorities, academia, and the private sector. This momentum will see the agreed Framework undergo global consultation and presentation to the UNWTO Statistics Committee and the UNWTO General Assembly for endorsement.

The successful conclusion of this journey owes much to the valuable efforts and collaboration of 44 countries plus over 30 international organizations, academic institutions, and regional tourism authorities. To date, 28 MST pilots have demonstrated the policy relevance and technical feasibility of the Framework, which is flexible to adapt to different country situations and policy priorities

MST fills a critical gap in tourism data by offering a consensus and guidance for generating data on the economic, social and environmental dimensions of tourism’s sustainability. Now, more than ever, governments, businesses and citizens require reliable and standardized data to assess performance, communicate progress, inspire the right policies and more innovative business models, and to ensure that tourism action on the ground contributes to achieving a more sustainable development.

Advanced materials make the chassis both lightweight and rigid, aligning with Lotus’s core principles. Key components are made from weight-saving aluminium alloys, which make up 43% of the platform and 50.7% of the body structure. These are supplemented by high-strength steels and lightweight composites for added durability and crash resilience. The result is a car that excels in performance, comfort, and safety across various terrains.

Power, performance and efficiency

The Eletre hyper-SUV offers a blend of high performance and energy efficiency, ideal for both long drives and daily use. Its 800-volt, 112kWh battery charges quickly and efficiently, and features thermal management for optimised performance in various conditions. The vehicle is Lotus’s first all-wheel drive, with lightweight electric motors and advanced inverters. The base Eletre offers 603hp, a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds, and a 600km range, while the Eletre R ramps up to 905hp and a 490km range. Energy is recovered during braking, and drivers can adjust regenerative levels. The SUV also has a 2,250kg towing capacity and extra storage, balancing luxury and practicality.

Form and Function – Aerodynamics and Digital Cockpit

Eletre’s sleek, cab-forward design elevates Lotus’s iconic mid-engine aesthetic into a hyper-SUV. Eletre modernizes Lotus’s mid-engine design as a hyper-SUV with advanced aerodynamics inspired by Evija and Emira, achieving a 0.26 drag coefficient. The vehicle features a customisable active front grille for optimised airflow, which stays open in Track Mode for peak performance. Electric Reverse Mirror Displays replace traditional mirrors to enhance visibility and cut wind resistance by 1.5%, boosting range. A retractable LIDAR provides advanced driver assistance, while an adaptive rear spoiler automatically adjusts to driving conditions, reducing drag by up to 1.8%.

The Eletre’s luxurious, tech-forward cabin features a ‘Digital Cockpit’ with powerful Qualcomm chips and Lotus Hyper OS, offering 5G and OTA updates. Voice commands and multiple OLED screens provide easy access to advanced navigation, wireless charging, and safety features. The cabin also includes a high-quality KEF audio system with Dolby Atmos and a companion app for remote controls. All this comes with a focus on sustainability and energy-efficient design, such as a smart panoramic roof.

Additionally, the advanced safety and comfort systems, including 34 sensors and two NVIDIA Orin-X chips tenable Level 4 autonomous driving. Highway Assist makes long-distance driving easier by managing speed and lane positioning between 30-150km/h. The Driver Monitoring System alerts for driver fatigue or distraction, while the Life Detection and Care system prevents leaving children or pets in a hot car, even alerting emergency authorities if needed.

Daring Exterior, Luxurious Interior

The exterior is bold with a cab-forward stance, long wheelbase, and minimal overhangs for a lightweight, sporty look. A key design feature is ‘porosity’ for improved airflow and reduced drag. Elements like vents in the bonnet and wheel arches contribute to enhanced performance and range. The sleek front incorporates LEDs, an active grille, and discreetly placed LIDAR, nodding to Lotus classics like the Emira and Evija. The side profile features aerodynamic curves, a steep windscreen, and a specialised ‘air blade’ on the floating D-pillar. The rear boasts a full-width light strip that changes colour to indicate battery charge, along with a unique carbon-fibre roof spoiler housing another LIDAR sensor.

Inside, the Eletre offers a driver-centred cockpit with a high console, premium materials, and an option for a four-seat layout. A fixed panoramic roof brightens the cabin, which includes a recurring triangular design theme. Features include wireless charging, hidden cupholders, and ample door storage. Sustainability is key, with upholstery options like Re-Fibre from fashion waste and 100% recyclable Econyl carpets.

With the Emira confirmed as the final combustion engine Lotus sports car, the Eletre’s significance as the first all-electric Lotus hyper-SUV is made all the more significant: it is a key milestone in the brand’s dramatic transformation as it embraces a bold new electrified era. Lotus has always used technical innovation, advanced aerodynamics and lightweighting to create vehicles which set the class benchmark for performance, ride and handling. Thailand grants visa exemption to Chinese and Kazakhstani tourists from 25 September 2023. The Royal Thai Government led by Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Srettha Thavisin has announced the temporary tourist visa exemption scheme to passport holders of the People’s Republic of China and Republic of Kazakhstan effective from 25 September 2023 to 29 February 2024, to achieve this year’s tourism revenue target of 2.38 trillion Baht.

Chinese and Kazakhstani nationals will be granted a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay on tourism purpose in Thailand during the five-month visa exemption period.

H.E. Ms. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Ministry of Tourism and Sports, said “This stimulus visa scheme forms part of the government’s Quick-win measures announced on 11 September 2023 to achieve the long-term goal and boost the Thai economy through travel and tourism. It will help stimulate inbound travel from China which is one of Thailand’s key source tourist markets and Kazakhstan which is considered an emerging market, especially during this coming high tourist season. Ultimately, it will help revive Thai tourism and reach the revenue target set for this year.”

During the five-month visa exemption period, Thailand is expected to welcome 1,912,000 to 2,888,500 Chinese tourists – a year-on-year growth of about 41-62% – and generate a tourism income of around 92.58-140 billion Baht. From Kazakhstan, Thailand has forecasted 129,485 Kazakhstani tourists – a 49.73% increase over the same period last year – and 7.93 billion Baht in revenue.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said “The ‘ease of travelling’ policy will enable tourists to save time and spending on visa application and fee, making it easier for tourists to decide to travel to Thailand. With the visa exemption scheme, Thailand could expect to welcome around 4.04-4.4 million Chinese tourists in 2023 and achieve the forecasted revenue target of 257,500 million Baht.”

From 1 January to 10 September 2023, Thailand recorded 2,284,281 Chinese visitors, making China the second largest source of tourist markets after Malaysia. Without the visa exemption scheme, Thailand is expected to see 3,470,430 Chinese visitors in 2023 – about 31% of the recorded year in 2019 – and generate 174,358 million Baht.

The stimulus visa scheme takes effect just ahead of the Golden Week, one of the longest holidays in China, from 1-8 October 2023. During the weeklong holiday in China, airlines have announced their readiness to operate charter flights, increase flight frequencies, and introduce new routes between cities in China and Thailand including Chengdu – Samui, Beijing – Chiang Mai, Guangzhou – Chiang Mai, Shanghai – Chiang Mai, Shanghai – Phuket, Guangzhou – Phuket, and Kunming – Hat Yai.

“From Kazakhstan, Thailand expects the visa exemption scheme to help reach 180,000 tourists by the end of this year,” Ms. Thapanee added.

From 1 January to 10 September 2023, Thailand saw a record 108,636 tourists from Kazakhstan. Phuket is the favourite destination among Kazakhstani tourists.

The visa exemption scheme extended to Chinese and Kazakhstani tourists forms is expected to help revive Thai tourism and achieve this year’s target of 25-30 million tourists and 2.38 trillion Baht in revenue.

The policy is also expected to help fuel tourism growth through to 2024, reflecting the government’s policy that places tourism as a key mechanism for driving the Thai economy and making Thailand the preferred destination for travellers from around the world.

New Data Shows Investment Returning to Global Tourism Sector

New Data Shows Investment Returning to Global Tourism Sector - TRAVELINDEXMadrid, Spain, September 18, 2023 / TRAVELINDEX / Investment in the global tourism cluster has started to bounce back from the lows it touched during the pandemic off the back of the steady recovery of international tourist arrivals, according to a newly released report jointly produced by UNWTO and fDi Intelligence.

The report, which is based on data from fDi Markets, fDi Intelligence’s proprietary database of greenfield FDI projects, as well as international tourism data from UNWTO, provides a broad overview of the ongoing investment cycle in the tourism sector, breaking down investment figures by region, segments and companies. Key findings include:

  • Both FDI project numbers and job creation rates in the tourism cluster grew by 23% from 286 investments in 2021 to 352 in 2022. Job creation in tourism FDI also increased by 23% over the same period, to an estimated 36,400 in 2022.
  • The leading destination region for tourism FDI projects in 2022 was Western Europe with 143 announced investments at a combined estimated value of $2.2bn.
  • The number of announced projects into the Asia-Pacific region increased marginally by 2.4% to 42 projects in 2022.
  • The hotel and tourism sector accounted for almost two-thirds of all projects in the tourism cluster between 2018 and 2022. FDI projects increased by 25% from 2021 to 2022.

These investments will then pave the way for a skilled workforce that can deliver exceptional growth, drive innovation and, by embracing digital technologies, enhance the competitiveness and resilience of the tourism sector

“Greenfield FDI into the tourism sector is showing signs of life after all but vanishing in the pandemic years. With Covid–19 behind us, the sector has no time to waste in addressing the biggest challenge of our times: climate change and the resulting sustainability imperative,” comments Jacopo Dettoni, the editor of fDi Intelligence.

“To ensure the growth and competitiveness of the sector, significant investments must be made in education and talent by upskilling the professional workforce and implementing vocational and technical programmes. Only in this way can we equip young people — of whom only 50% have completed secondary education — with the knowledge and capabilities they need to thrive in the sector. These investments will then pave the way for a skilled workforce that can deliver exceptional growth, drive innovation and, by embracing digital technologies, enhance the competitiveness and resilience of the tourism sector,” argues Zurab Pololikashvili, UNWTO Secretary-General.

“As the sector steers its course towards recovery and growth, UNWTO now, more than ever, prioritises innovation, education and strategic investments as the pillars for recalibrating and adapting to these ever-evolving market dynamics. Spearheading a series of initiatives, we equip the professional workforce with new skills through upskilling and vocational workforce programmes, creating quality job opportunities, and raising average wages across the entire tourism value chain,” says Natalia Bayona, executive director of the UNWTO.

The North America and Asia-Pacific regions each contribute three companies to the top 10 investors list for tourism foreign direct investment (FDI) between 2018 and 2022. The rest of the top 10 comprises companies from Europe, with Spain-based Melia, UK-based Intercontinental Hotels Group, France-based Accor and UK-based Selina all featuring.
