UN Tourism: Putting Communities at the Centre of Tourism Development

UN Tourism Putting Communities at the Centre of Tourism Development - TRAVELINDEXUN Tourism has reaffirmed its commitment to innovation to enhance the evolution of the sector with a seminar on community-based tourism in Cuba. The Seminar “Enhancing Tourism Development through Innovation in Community-Based Tourism” was held within the framework of the 69th meeting of the UN Tourism Regional Commission for the Americas. The meeting served as a prelude to the institutional event and brought together leading players in the sector to address challenges, strategies and good practices in this tourism segment. The aim of the Seminar was to promote the development of community-based tourism through the empowerment of and investment in local populations, as well as the promotion of innovation in their products.

It is necessary to continue exploring models that promote the autonomy and participation of communities in the tourism management of their territories. Creativity, collaboration and commitment to local traditions are fundamental pillars in this journey towards more inclusive and responsible tourism.

Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of UN Tourism, said: “Community-based tourism in the region of the Americas shows great diversity and opportunities for the sustainable development and economic inclusion of local communities. It is necessary to continue exploring models that promote the autonomy and participation of communities in the tourism management of their territories. Creativity, collaboration and commitment to local traditions are fundamental pillars in this journey towards more inclusive and responsible tourism.”

After the opening, Natalia Bayona, Executive Director of UN Tourism, highlighted: “Community-based tourism is a great opportunity for social innovation and allows us to be creative with the tourism product itself. In 2022, the global market for this type of tourism amounted to USD 575.9 million. Latin America and the Caribbean, with their natural resources and great nature areas where local communities flourish, announced 80 greenfield projects between 2018-2023 representing USD 3.89 billion.”

The challenges of tourism and the role of communities

The topic of “Challenges, Strategies and Good Practices for Sustainable Tourism Development through Empowerment and Investment in Community Tourism”, was discussed by a panel including the Cuban Minister Juan Carlos García Granda and the Vice-Ministers of Tourism of Panama, Magda Durán; of Peru, Madeleine Burns, and of Colombia, Arturo Bravo. Gustavo Santos, Regional Director for the Americas of UN Tourism acted as the moderator of the discussion, as the participants outlined the current situation, shared experiences and expressed their proposals for the future of the sector.

A second panel consisted of a discussion involving both the private sector and representatives of the academic field. On this occasion, with the title “Promoting Social Innovation in Tourism through Impact Investments in Community Tourism, Human Capital and Business and Territorial Strategies”, the debate focused on investments.

A place for entrepreneurs and communities

Two startups belonging to the UN Tourism ecosystem participated in the last of the seminar’s debates. On the one hand, the company Quantum Temple, dedicated to the application of new technologies to conserve the cultural and natural resources of communities in Indonesia, and on the other, SmArt for Sustainability, from Panama, which incorporates cutting-edge technology and integration practices to move towards sustainability.

In addition to these meetings, local communities also had their space to publicize their work and showcase success stories, including the Women’s Association ‘Weaving Dreams and Flavours’ of Mampuján, Colombia, which has been an example of transformation for more than two decades. This group of women, including victims of sexual violence and displaced persons, has been able to weave suffering and transform it into a hymn to peace and a historical testimony.

The conference reflected UN Tourism’s efforts to promote the evolution of community-based tourism, among others, through its innovation network that includes a wide variety of startups and projects that promote this segment, as well as innovation challenges, which strengthen tourism initiatives in local communities, while helping to develop new strategies and give visibility to these projects at a global level.

Rural development

The Seminar concluded with a final panel in which Antonio López de Ávila, coordinator of the Programme of Tourism for Rural Development, shared the activities carried out by UN Tourism in this field. He was joined by representatives of Raqchi (Perú) y Oyachí (Ecuador), both members of the Best Tourism Villages Network. They have shown how sustainable and inclusive tourism can significantly support development, create jobs, retain rural populations, generate extra income, and add to the general wellbeing of communities.

Women take Centre Stage Building Inclusive Tourism in Asia & the Pacific

Women take Centre Stage Building Inclusive Tourism in Asia & the Pacific - TRAVELINDEXWomen-led tourism initiatives are driving sustainability efforts forward across Asia and the Pacific region but more financial investment, training and equal opportunities are still needed to reach gender equality.

The 2nd Regional Conference on the Empowerment of Women in Tourism in Asia & the Pacific provided a platform for some of the most successful women in tourism from the region to spotlight their initiatives, identify challenges and develop strategies for inclusive growth and sustainable development. This is in line with the drive to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

UN Tourism and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia co-hosted the event. Over 500 participants from 25 countries gathered to share best practices, forge new partnerships and discuss measures to promote gender equality in the tourism sector. Tourism’s contribution to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda was central to discussions of the Ministerial Roundtable and the three panels which covered some of the key areas for women’s empowerment in tourism, including entrepreneurship, leadership, education, accessibility and workforce participation.

‘Centre Stage’ project expanded to Asia and Pacific

One of the highlights of the conference was the announcement that UN Tourism’s flagship ‘Centre Stage’ capacity-building programme for gender equality is now open to all its Asia and Pacific Member States. The programme provides targeted support to governments and tourism businesses, creating more opportunities for women’s empowerment and their professional development.

Among the set of key recommendations that emerged from discussions are supporting women-owned businesses, introducing gender-responsive budgeting, more training opportunities and promoting women’s leadership in decision-making roles.

Speaking about the conference, Harry Hwang, Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific of UN Tourism, said “the inspirational women gathered in Bali are role models for an inclusive and sustainable future for tourism. Today is an important milestone on the road to gender equality but as we have seen, we have a lot more work to do.”

Angela Tanoesoedibjo, Vice Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Deputy Head of Tourism and Creative Economy Agency of Indonesia stated that “Indonesian women participate in and contribute significantly to the tourism sector. In Indonesia, data shows that 54.22% of tourism workers are women, similar to the global trend”.

Sandiaga Uno, Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy of Indonesia, added “as we’ve seen, women are the motor of the Indonesian tourism sector. We are committed to providing more empowerment opportunities, breaking down barriers and making sure women are centre stage of our future development.”

Macao Welcomes Over 450 Delegates to the PATA Annual Summit 2024

Macao Welcomes Over 450 Delegates to the PATA Annual Summit 2024 - TRAVELINDEXMacau, Macao SAR, May 24, 2024 / TRAVELINDEX / The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) welcomed over 450 delegates from nearly 200 organisations across 29 destinations to the PATA Annual Summit 2024 (PAS 2024) at the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau, China.

PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid said, “On behalf of PATA, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our host, the Macao Government Tourism Office, our co-host SJM, all our partners and sponsors, and the dedicated delegates who have contributed to making the PATA Annual Summit 2024 a resounding success. Your unwavering support and collaboration have made this event truly meaningful for PATA and the broader travel and tourism community. Thank you for your commitment to advancing our shared goals.”

The three-day summit, graciously hosted by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and co-hosted by SJM Resorts, S.A., spanned from May 15-17. Under the theme “Reimagining Tourism”, the extensive programme comprised one and half days of PATA internal meetings, a conference spanning across one and half days, the PATA Youth Symposium, and a destination experience programme including cultural workshops and destination tours. Additionally, the event showcased the Association’s latest initiatives and introduced new elements to the summit.

Macao Government Tourism Office Director, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said, “The PATA Annual Summit was a great success, gathering delegates from across the Asia Pacific and beyond to Reimagining Tourism and continue to work together to build a vibrant yet responsible development of the tourism industry in the region. Macao was very pleased to welcome another PATA flagship event after several years, and to have the opportunity to showcase participants an update and firsthand experience on how we are reimagining tourism in our city, towards more diversification, as we develop into a world center of tourism and leisure.”

Ms. Daisy Ho, Managing Director of SJM Resorts S.A. said, “PATA is an old friend of Macau, and bringing this Summit back is like bringing family home. She remarked, “Reflecting on the past few years, – from the bustling travel peaks of 2019 to the devastating lows of the pandemic – the one key takeaway is the interconnectedness of our world. We have seen firsthand that we are not just one industry; we are one global community, sharing one planet. We often speak of the 3Ps: People, Planet, and Prosperity, as fundamental pillars of sustainability. However, here in Macau, we are guided by 3 additional Ps that are just as vital: Public-Private-Partnership. These have remained at the forefront of SJM’s agenda from the outset, and hosting this PATA Summit is one fine example of this joint effort.”

PATA Chair Peter Semone said, “Today’s theme, Reimagining Tourism, involves a fundamental shift in how we conceive, plan, and engage in tourism activities. It goes beyond simply improving existing models and instead seeks to transform the entire tourism industry to make it more sustainable, responsible, and inclusive. This could include incorporating principles of ecotourism and sustainable development, promoting cultural exchange and understanding, leveraging technology for more immersive and accessible experiences, and prioritising the well-being of local communities and environments over sheer economic gains.”

On May 15, the summit commenced with the PATA Executive Board and PATA Board Meetings, and the PATA Life Members Get-Together, alongside the PATA Power of Networking session and the inaugural Education Roundtable session.

The following day began with the PATA Youth Symposium 2024 which was held offsite at the host university, Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). Other insightful sessions which occurred simultaneously with the symposium consisted of the Government and Industry Roundtables, as well as the PATA Chapter Congress.

The PATA-WTCF China Dialogue, supported by the World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF) and sponsored by Dragon Trail International, was also held on the morning of the second day. The Dialogue served as a platform for industry experts to delve deep into discussions of the challenges and opportunities that can be found in the ever-evolving sector of China Inbound Tourism.

The day concluded with PAS 2024 Welcome Dinner Reception and PATA Awards Presentation, which saw attendees in their best national costumes for the Cultural Attire Competition @ PAS2024, in celebration of diversity, cross-cultural understanding, and the rich heritage of each destination.
