Southern Ocean Lodge

Southern Ocean Lodge was destroyed in the bushfires that spread with speed and ferocity across the western end of Kangaroo Island in January 2020. Most importantly, all guests and our staff are safe. We owe a huge debt of thanks to our amazing team at Southern Ocean Lodge and to the South Australia Country Fire Service whose crews and volunteers worked so hard to protect lives and landscape.

We are immediately committed to rebuilding the lodge, and to taking a leading role in whatever ways we can to help rebuild the tourism industry on Kangaroo Island. Whilst it’s currently too early to estimate a date for re-opening we’d like to reassure everyone that the recreation of Southern Ocean Lodge is our next focus.

Southern Ocean Lodge represents a new breed of luxury accommodation offering a journey within the destination and where clever architectural design, premium appointments, locally commissioned artworks and custom furnishings create a timeless appeal.

LOCATION
Australia’s third largest island, Kangaroo Island sits a mere 15km from the shores of South Australia on the mainland. Spanning 155km in length by 55km in width, and covering some 4,500 sq km, Kangaroo Island offers the best of the mainland on a smaller scale. Boasting twenty-one national and conservation parks, Kangaroo Island has established itself as a premiere destination for nature lovers.

Kangaroo Island sits a mere 15km from the shores of South Australia. Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest island, spanning 155km in length by 55km in width. Southern Ocean Lodge is located at Hanson Bay on the island’s south-west coast, a 50-minute drive from the airport or 90-minute drive from the ferry terminal. There are several transport options to and from Kangaroo Island to suit domestic and international travellers.

ROOMS & SUITES
Twenty-one luxury suites cantilever along the curve of limestone cliffs, each with open views of the Southern Ocean and undulating coastal wilderness. Signature design elements such as sandblasted limestone floors and recycled spotted gum feature walls, as well as contemporary custom furnishings and works commissioned from Kangaroo Island artists offer private house seats for the natural theatre of this dramatic landscape.

DINING
Dining at Southern Ocean Lodge is an exclusively local affair, with a bounty of premium ingredients for the kitchen’s dynamic, produce-driven menus pairing with premium South Australian wines to create a real taste of Kangaroo Island. Driven by a commitment to provide a real ‘sense of place’ for guests, the Baillie Lodges’ Culinary Philosophy is to source local produce for its daily changing menu and is essential to the dining experience at Southern Ocean Lodge. Chefs Dann Rowell and Tom Saliba and their team in the kitchen at Southern Ocean Lodge deliver a menu that connects guests with the locale and features the finest regional produce from the restaurant and the cellar to the in-suite bar.

ACTIVITIES
Southern Ocean Lodge offers guests a complete and personal Kangaroo Island experience. A signature itinerary of guided island excursions is designed daily and included in the tariff, allowing guests to encounter abundant wildlife around the ‘zoo without fences’ and discover the island’s unique natural attractions.

WELLNESS
The satellite Southern Spa is reached via a coastal boardwalk, set above the native mallee. A menu of signature spa treatments features the Australian-made Li’Tya spa care range and Aboriginal massage techniques.
